and Important Tips On Buying a Puppy
Just good information, quoting the page .. "Buying a purebred puppy is like marriage or any other long-term commitment -- impulse or convenience shouldn't determine where you do your matchmaking. The pup you buy should be a quality companion that looks and acts as a fine representative of his breed. Considering the source of the pup is the first step of the smart buyer. Rate your pup's origin with this checklist."

and Important How To Find A Dog
This is a good page, brought to us by Breeders.net. Go through it and answer the questions it asks. If your honest you'll know your doing the right thing. Please review this entire site, rescue information, a newsletter called "The Straight Poop" (can you say that on the internet?), and a lot more. Good stuff.

No store bought dogs please!

And Your Little Dog, Too!
Here is a new article about "Terry" the Cairn Terrier better known as "Toto". I'll pull a paragraph from the article here.  Terry was the female Cairn terrier who played Toto in The Wizard of Oz. By the time she won the role of Dorothy’s faithful friend, Terry had already appeared in six films and worked with such stars as Shirley Temple and Spencer Tracy. Terry went on to work in movies into the 1940s, but after Oz, she was known forever as Toto. It's a fun article, and please go to their home page too. Thanks Karen for your tip!

SitStay.com - Free Pedigree Builder!
Don't like your dog's pedigree? Don't have a pedigree for your dog? Make up a new one here! No, just kidding. But this is an interesting site with a free html pedigree builder for those of us who want to take "involving" our relatives and families in our dog ownership a step further. Enter your pooch's information on the site, and have the web page it will create emailed to you and others!

How to Join the Cairn E-Mail List
Are you owned by a Cairn Terrier and want to talk to other human pets who belong to Cairn Terriers? You should subscribe to the Cairn Terrier Mailing List.

Startkabel - Cairn Terrier
This is a very very tidy site, full of links to other Cairn sites as well as links to breeders, information, clubs and a lot more. Easy to navigate as well. Please take a look!

The Cairn Terrier - History, Home, Attitude, Grooming, Health, Standards, Training and More
I've separated out grooming information in a link a little further down, but this small but informative site is wonderful information for those investigating ownership by a Cairn.

Housetraining - How to House Train Your Pup In 3 Easy Steps
This is a site offering terrific advice about housetraining and crate training. I think (therefor I am) that anyone with a new puppy should read both pages found here. I'm certain you'll get something out of all of it.

Anti-Smell Housetraining Idea!
We got this from a Jennifer from Chicago, and thought there may be considerable interest. Quoting Jennifer: I wanted to let you know about a great idea we had that you could perhaps let other cairn owners know about. We have a ten-month-old Cairn named Pablo, who is paper-trained. Well, the poo-poos were too stinky for the garbage, and we were spending a fortune on garbage bags because we were compelled to take out the garbage every time Pabs went. My husband came up with a wonderful solution, a Playtex Diaper Genie! it seals in odors so we just scoop the poop, toss it in the genie, and twist it down. if any of your people have the same problem we had, this is the answer! Thanks Jennifer, and we hope that Playtex appreciates the additional sales!

E-Group "The 3ThreeCs - Founded February 14, 1999"
Terrier lovers unite! Across the rugged landscape of the ancient and craggy highlands comes the skirling of the bagpipes and the echoes of the hardy "cousins" ARRRROOOOOOOOOO. . . . . . . . They are issuing an invitation to come join this list! Aye, lassies and laddies, 'tis true! There canna be nae finer place to be a gatherin'.

AKC Title Abbreviations - Unraveling The Mystery
Are you the only one at the dog shows confused by all the little letters in the doggy titles? Not likely, but with this link you can unravel the mysterious abbreviation codes that everyone else seems to know as a second language. From the AKC site, here is a list that should help you.

Cairn Terrier Dog - Dogbiz.com
A neat site with links to breed standards, clubs and rescue, breeders, etc.

Cairn Terrier, UK/KC Standard
A listing of standards for our Cairn, good information for someone just looking into Cairns for ownership.

Deja.com Dog Ratings
Make your voice count! Vote now and vote often. Our little breed seems to need support. The Yorkies are winning again! I smell a conspiracy.

New Addition  Dorthy's Oz Place
I could spend a lot of time putting together sites dedicated to "The Wizard of Oz", or just introduce you to this site. A wonderful collection of these sites.

Cairn Terrier
This is another real good summary page of all the descriptive points of a Cairn, as well as info on temperament, height, weight, health issues, etc.

The Intelligence of Dogs
According to S. Coren, author of "The Intelligence of Dogs", there are three types of dog intelligence:
1. Adaptive Intelligence (learning and problem-solving ability). This is specific to the individual animal and is measured by canine IQ tests.
2. Instinctive Intelligence. This is specific to the individual animal and is measured by canine IQ tests.
3. Working/Obedience Intelligence. This is breed dependent.
DO NOT! Click the above link, obviously they are wrong, probably written by a Yorkie owner! It has [use a really really doubtful tone] intelligence rankings for dogs

Cairn Terrier Health Concerns:
Genitic concerns, dental care, the aging Cairn, emergency first aid, and more are covered from this point. The Rose Croft Cairn site (where this link leads) is simply a wealth of information surrounding our little critters. I can't link to every page, but you certainly should visit them, and send Jerrie a thank you email.

Getting Started With Your Cairn Terrier Puppy:
Quoting the first paragraph: "It is important to keep your puppy warm after bringing it home. Since it is accustomed to being near it mother and litter mates, consider placing a hot water bottle in the puppy’s bed; it should be filled with warm water and wrapped in a towel. To further comfort the puppy, you can simulate the mother’s heartbeat by wrapping a ticking clock in a towel and placing it near the puppy. Gradually adjust your puppy to cooler temperatures as it gets older."

FEEDING YOUR CAIRN TERRIER - It's all capitalized cause Nugget would want everyone to pay attention to food issues.
Information from the Continental Kennel Club Cairn Terrier Information Page. A quick quote from the lead paragraph; Feeding is one of the most important areas in an Cairn Terrier’s development; it begins very early when the puppy is weaned and continues throughout its life. Feeding is not THE most important to Nugget. That implies of course that there are other areas too. Food seems to be the center of her little universe.

Exercise: - Nugget Likes exercise, I don't so this is in small letters
More from the Continental Kennel Club "Exercise is an essential element in your Cairn Terrier’s development, both physically and mentally. While it is important to monitor your dog’s dietary habits and provide the proper medical attention, it is equally imperative to provide your dog with adequate exercise."

Training Your Cairn Terrier: Still in small letters cause training means usually not getting her way to Nugget.
Still more from the Continental Kennel Club. Another quote "The training of your Cairn Terrier, you should begin as soon as you acquire the dog. You can do the training yourself, or you can hire a professional trainer to do the work. Local dog training classes are usually available; they will be listed in the newspaper, or your veterinarian can recommend a trainer. "

Housing: What was once yours is now your Cairns!
No, just kidding. Well .... sorta. Anyway quoting again from the first paragraph: "Before considering housing accommodations, determine the environment which is best suited for you. If your Cairn Terrier will be kept indoors, provide it a permanent place, away from the flow of traffic. A garage or basement could make a suitable home for your pet, or you may arrange for your dog to have a room of it own." We're negotiating with Nugget now trying to get a room of OUR own.

Caring For Your Cairn's Teeth - Dog Toothbrushes!?
I know that this is an important area. It's just a little funny if you sit quietly all by yourself and actually think about it. Anyway, quoting again: "Cairn Terrier puppies need to chew while their teeth and jaws are developing for a variety of reasons. Chewing helps cut the baby teeth, makes sure they are shed at the right time, and helps cut and settle the permanent teeth in the jaws. It also helps the development of the jaws." Sorry Shotzie, never thought of it then.

Health
Please e-mail the folks at the Continental Kennel Club and thank them for all of this wonderful information. Like another Cairn website owner said. A site should contain useful information, certainly this is one of those sites. Quoting the first paragraph again: "Cairn Terrier puppies rely on their mother’s milk to provide protective antibodies. Approximately two weeks after weaning, their natural immunity begins to diminish; therefore, it is important to bring your puppy to the veterinarian for a check up and vaccination schedule."

The Well Groomed Cairn
Well, at least the information is free .... Cairn Terriers shed little and don't require much grooming. Daily brushing alternating ordinary and wire brushes should suffice.

Not the real tape, I used it to get your attention!  "Grooming Your Cairn" - The Cairn Terrier Club of Greater Detroit
Five phases, puppy coat through getting ready for the ring. There isn't anywhere on the web I can send you to review this. But we use this tape time and time again as we (Kathy) grooms Nugget. I guess it's one thing to read instructions, but it certainly is helpful to have someone there to show you how it's done.

To get this $30.00 tape from The Cairn Terrier Club of Greater Detroit email:
"Pat" at kirkshire@chartermi.net

You'll be contacted with instruction on where to mail your check.

More New  Cairn Grooming - From Col Potter Cairn Rescue Site
A terrific diagram on how to hand strip your Cairn, We've used it much to Nugget's chagrin.

More New  Cairn Terrier Stripping - Word Document
303kb in size, the same diagram as seen at the Col. Potter site but save so you can save it easy, as well as print it. The pictures have been enlarged to.

A Nugget's Golden Site Cairn Terriers In The Movies
This is actually a link from the Tripod page above, but I thought you might want it highlighted cause there it's in small print. Just a word to the wise, the fact the movie has a Cairn in it, doesn't always mean it's worth the $1.50 for the rental cost. Especially if the cast includes ex-Saturday Night Live personnel

You Be The Judge - THE CAIRN TERRIER
Alright, it's a Saturday afternoon and your at another dog show. You're watching the judge look over all the Cairns and you tell yourself. Hey! I could do that. That dog there is cute, but wait that ones even better looking. Sound easy? Try this link and look at what actually has to be decided.

Jack Onofrio Dog Shows, L.L.C. - American Kennel Club Annually Licensed Superintendents
I've added this link because it lists many of the shows here in Minnesota. But you'll find listings, results, advertising (of course), discussion groups and a lot more. Here is there introduction as quoted from this site: "ack Onofrio Dog Shows was founded on the principle of providing the fancy with the Best in Shows. In 1968 with this principle and a love for the sport, Jack and Dorothy Onofrio started what is now one of the most recognized Superintendent organizations in the country. Today, Jack D & Sue Onofrio, company President Tim James, and a dedicated staff of over 60 men and women provide Superintending services to over 400 all breed clubs, 200 specialty clubs, and 20 obedience clubs annually."

rec.pets.dogs: Cairn Terriers Breed-FAQ
